A DIN-type switch disconnector fuse (SDF) is a robust electrical safety device that combines a switch and a fuse holder into a single unit. "DIN type" refers to the German Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) standard, which specifies the dimensions and design of the fuse links used in the device. These fuse links, also known as NH fuses, have a knife-blade contact design.
How it works
The DIN-type SDF serves two primary functions:
- Switching: It provides a safe and visible means of isolating power to a circuit. This is essential for maintenance, repairs, or when an emergency shutdown is necessary.
- Overcurrent protection: The unit holds a replaceable DIN/NH fuse link. In the event of a short circuit or an overload, the fuse link melts, breaking the circuit and preventing damage to the electrical equipment and wiring.
Key characteristics
- High ratings: DIN-type SDFs are designed for high-current applications and can be found in a wide range of current ratings, from 32A to over 800A.
- High breaking capacity: The fuses have a high breaking capacity, meaning they can safely interrupt very high fault currents.
- Durable construction: These units are built to withstand high temperatures and electrical stress, often featuring robust materials and safety features like terminal shrouds and phase barriers.
- Application: They are commonly used as main incoming switches or distribution board switches in industrial, commercial, and utility applications.
- Open or cubicle mounting: Units are available in different formats, such as "open execution" for mounting inside a cubicle or panel, or with an enclosure for freestanding use.
Comparison with other fuse types The DIN type is one of the two main standards for industrial fuse holders, the other being the British Standard (BS) type. The primary difference lies in the physical design of the fuse link and the holder.
Components and construction : A DIN-type SDF consists of several key parts working together:
Switch mechanism: A quick-make/quick-break mechanism, often operated by a sturdy handle, allows for safe and independent switching, regardless of the operator's speed. Some designs feature a "quad-break" system for faster and more reliable interruption.
- Fuse holder: This unit is designed to accept standardized DIN-type (NH) fuses with knife-blade contacts. Many systems allow the fuse assembly to be "racked" out for inspection without fully disconnecting the wiring.
- Contacts: The main electrical contacts use a knife-contact mechanism and are designed for a high electrical and mechanical life. Some systems use magnetic attraction in the iron circuit to increase contact force as current rises, ensuring a robust connection.
- Insulating material: Individual poles are housed in a robust, self-extinguishing, and high-temperature-resistant insulating material, such as fiberglass-reinforced plastic.
- Enclosure: Many SDFs are available in durable sheet-steel enclosures for standalone use or as "open execution" models for installation within an existing panel. The enclosure provides protection against harsh environmental conditions.
