An on-load changeover (CO) switch is an electrical switch designed to safely transfer an electrical load from one power source to another while the circuit is still energized and operational. This allows for a continuous, uninterrupted power supply during an outage or when switching between a main power grid and a backup generator.
How an on-load changeover switch works
The key difference between an on-load and an off-load changeover switch is that the on-load switch is built with a mechanism to manage the electrical arc that occurs when switching a live current.
- Dual power sources: The switch has two separate input terminals—one for the primary power source (e.g., the utility grid) and another for a secondary source (e.g., a generator).
- Contact mechanism: The switch uses robust electrical contacts that move to connect the electrical load to only one power source at a time. This mechanical interlocking prevents both sources from being connected simultaneously, which would cause a dangerous short circuit.
- Arc suppression: When switching on-load, the contacts are designed to safely break the current and extinguish the resulting electrical arc. This prevents equipment damage and electrical hazards.
- Three stable positions: On-load switches typically have three distinct positions:
- Position I: Connects the load to the primary power source.
- Position O (Off): Disconnects the load from both power sources, isolating the system.
- Position II: Connects the load to the secondary or backup power source.
Types of on-load changeover switches
- Manual changeover switch: This type requires an operator to physically turn a handle or lever to switch between power sources. They are simple, affordable, and common in residential and small commercial settings.
- Automatic transfer switch (ATS): An ATS automatically detects a loss of power from the primary source and transfers the load to the backup source in seconds. When power is restored, it switches back to the primary source. This is critical for applications where uninterrupted power is essential, like hospitals and data centers.
- Motorized changeover switch: This type uses a motor to operate the switching mechanism and can be controlled remotely. It is used in industrial applications where frequent or automated switching is needed, but an ATS is not required.
Common applications
- Residential homes: For seamlessly switching between the main utility supply and a home generator during power outages.
- Commercial buildings: To provide backup power for critical systems, such as lighting, security systems, and IT networks.
- Industrial processes: In factories and plants, on-load switches ensure continuous operation of machinery to avoid costly production downtime.
- Healthcare facilities: Hospitals and clinics rely on ATS systems to prevent life-support equipment from losing power.
- Data centers: To ensure that servers and data storage are not interrupted, protecting critical data.
Key features to consider
- Current and voltage rating: The switch's capacity must be able to safely handle the total electrical load and voltage of your system.
- Number of poles: Available in two-pole (for single-phase) and four-pole (for three-phase) configurations, which determine how many conductors can be switched.
- Enclosure rating: For outdoor or harsh industrial environments, a switch with a high Ingress Protection (IP) rating is necessary to protect it from dust and moisture.
- Safety features: Look for built-in safety mechanisms such as mechanical interlocking and the option for padlocks to prevent unauthorized operation.
- Ease of installation: Some switches are designed with features like staggered terminals to make cable installation and inspection easier.
