A load break switch (LBS) is a switching device designed to safely open or close an electrical circuit while it is under normal operating load conditions. Unlike a circuit breaker, an LBS can make and break regular load currents and minor overcurrents, but it is not built to interrupt large, destructive short-circuit currents. For protection against short circuits, LBS devices are often combined with fuses.
How a load break switch works
When a load break switch is operated to break a circuit, an electrical arc forms between the separating contacts. The LBS uses a special arc-quenching system to safely and quickly extinguish this arc, preventing damage to the switch and ensuring safe operation. Different types of switches use different insulating and arc-quenching methods:
- Air-insulated: The arc is extinguished by compressed air.
- SF₆ gas-insulated: The switch chamber is filled with sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) gas, which has excellent arc-quenching and insulating properties.
- Vacuum: The contacts are enclosed in a vacuum chamber, where the arc is extinguished almost instantly.
Types of load break switches
Load break switches are primarily categorized by their arc-quenching medium and voltage level.
- Vacuum Load Break Switches: Uses a vacuum to extinguish the arc, offering high reliability and a long electrical life. It is well-suited for medium-voltage applications, including substations and industrial facilities.
- SF₆ Gas Load Break Switches: Utilizes SF₆ gas for insulation and arc quenching. These are known for their compact size, reliability, and low maintenance needs, and are used in medium to high-voltage applications.
- Air Load Break Switches: Uses air as the insulating and arc-extinguishing medium. They are an economical choice for many medium-voltage applications, such as overhead lines and substations.
- Oil-Immersed Load Break Switches: The arc is extinguished by the surrounding insulating oil. These are older, heavier designs used primarily for outdoor applications.
- Manual vs. Motorized: LBS devices are also available with either a manual (lever/handle) or motorized operating mechanism. Motorized switches enable remote control, which is useful in large-scale systems or hazardous locations.
- Fuse Combinations: Some LBS units are combined with high-rupturing capacity (HRC) fuses to provide overload and short-circuit protection.
Common applications
- Power distribution networks: Used for sectioning networks to isolate faults or perform maintenance.
- Transformers: Used to switch transformers on or off under load for servicing.
- Ring main units (RMUs): Provides compact and reliable power distribution in urban underground systems.
- Industrial facilities: Ensures safe power control for large motors and other equipment.
- Renewable energy systems: Used in solar and wind power installations for isolating components.
