A digital counter totaliser is a device that accurately counts and displays the total number of events, items, or objects passing by a sensor. These tools are used in industrial and commercial settings to monitor and track production processes, inventory levels, and other counting applications

A digital counter totaliser works by converting physical events into electrical pulses, which an internal electronic circuit (typically flip-flops and a microprocessor) counts and displays as a cumulative total. 
Here is a step-by-step explanation of its operation:
1. Event Detection by a Sensor
The process begins with a sensor detecting a physical event or object. This can be: 
  • A proximity sensor that detects an object without physical contact.
  • A photoelectric sensor that uses a light beam to detect when an object passes.
  • A limit switch that is physically triggered.
  • An encoder that measures rotation or length. 
When an event is detected, the sensor generates a single, clean electrical signal or pulse. 
2. Signal Conditioning
The input pulses from the sensor may sometimes contain electrical "noise" or inconsistent voltage levels, especially in industrial environments. A signal conditioning circuit filters out this noise and converts the input into a clean, uniform digital pulse that the internal counting logic can reliably process. 
3. Counting Logic (Internal Circuitry)
The conditioned digital pulses are sent to the counter's internal logic circuit, which is primarily composed of flip-flops (sequential logic circuits): 
  • Counting: Each incoming pulse causes the value stored in the flip-flops to increment (or decrement, depending on the configuration) by one.
  • Accumulation: The circuit continuously adds each pulse to the running total. Unlike a rate meter (which measures events over a specific time interval), a totaliser just accumulates the grand total.
  • Memory: Most digital totalisers use non-volatile memory to store the count value, ensuring that the total is retained even if power is interrupted. 
4. Display and Output
The current count value stored in the internal memory is sent to a decoder circuit and then displayed on a numerical readout, usually an LCD or LED screen, for easy monitoring. 
Advanced totalisers may also provide additional outputs:
  • Relay outputs to trigger an alarm or stop a machine when a preset count is reached.
  • Data logging or connectivity (e.g., Ethernet or RS-485) to send the count data to a computer or a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller).

  • For standard totalising: A basic counter like the
