A switch knob is a control knob that is used to control or adjust electronic or electrical devices and fits many types of rotary switches, encoders, and shafts. Once a knob is connected to a switch, the knob typically works in a counterclockwise rotation to produce increased input.

A rotary switch is a switch operated by rotation. These are often chosen when more than 2 positions are needed, such as a three-speed fan or a CB radio with multiple frequencies of reception or "channels".

• D-shaft: This shaft is shaped like the letter "D," with one flat side. Knobs for this type have a matching D-shaped cavity and are typically secured with a friction fit.
• Knurled (splined) shaft: This shaft has a series of fine ridges, or splines, for a friction-based fit. Knobs for knurled shafts are pressed on and held in place by the tight fit.
• Slotted shaft: This shaft has a single slot on the end. Knobs for slotted shafts are often secured with a set screw that presses into the slot.
• Collet knobs: These knobs use a screw-tightened collet inside the knob to provide a very secure and centered fit on a plain round shaft.
• Set screw knobs: A small threaded hole in the side of the knob holds a set screw. This screw is tightened against the flat side of a D-shaft or the side of a round shaft to hold the knob in place.
